Singing priest invited to audition for the Metropolitan Opera

The Rev. Ed Payne

Before becoming an Episcopal priest, the Rev. Ed Payne was an opera singer. He made his debut singingĀ for the Metropolitan Opera Company in a production of “Porgy and Bess.” (You can read more about Payne’s opera career in this 2014 Connections article, page 11.)

Now some 27 years later, the Met is bringing back a production of Porgy and Bess for its 2019 season, and Payne has been invited to audition for a role. His audition date is Tuesday, Sept. 19.

On Sunday, Sept. 17, Payne will be the guest celebrant and preacher at the 10:30 a.m. service at St. Paul’s, Greenville. Why not stop by and wish him a safe trip to New York the next day? St. Paul’s is located at 201 S. Broadway in Greenville. Call 937.548.5575 for more information.
