Singing priest invited to audition for the Metropolitan Opera August 15, 2017 e-Connections, Relationships The Rev. Ed Payne Before becoming an Episcopal priest, the Rev. Ed Payne was an opera singer. He made his debut singing for the Metropolitan Opera Company in a production of “Porgy and Bess.” (You can read more about Payne’s opera career in this 2014 Connections article, page 11.) Now some 27 years later, the Met is bringing back a production of Porgy and Bess for its 2019 season, and Payne has been invited to audition for a role. His audition date is Tuesday, Sept. 19. On Sunday, Sept. 17, Payne will be the guest celebrant and preacher at the 10:30 a.m. service at St. Paul’s, Greenville. Why not stop by and wish him a safe trip to New York the next day?
