Civil Discourse Training CANCELLED
March 21 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm$15.00
Update 3/10/21: Due to travel limitations of Episcopal Church staff resulting from concerns about the spread of coronavirus, the March 21 Civil Discourse workshop with Alan Yarborough of the Office of Government Relations has been cancelled. Organizers hope to reschedule later in the year.
Political divides are growing deeper, and many of us look ahead in 2020 with concern and worry. We do not have to continue this way. Peacebuilding involves learning from and working with others while also sharing different perspectives with humility and vulnerability. To solve our world’s greatest challenges, we must learn to unlock the diversity of ideas and viewpoints as an asset for creating stronger solutions. This civil discourse training aims to enhance our ability to learn from and understand one another, and to apply that practice to personal and public policy conversations.
Alan Yarborough of The Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations and our Social Justice and Public Policy Commission are offering this seminar to address the lack of civility in our public and private lives today.
Learning to engage in civil discourse means learning to:
• Disagree with other opinions without disparaging other people.
• Disagree with other opinions while recognizing that we also have room to learn.
• Disagree with other opinions in an environment that preserves physical and emotional safety, even if emotional levels “run high.”
Civil discourse serves as a guiding practice in personal and public conversations and deliberations over issues of critical importance to both ourselves and others.
Registration fee is $15, which includes lunch and materials. For more information, contact the Rev. Deniray Mueller at firstname.lastname@example.org or 614.668.6036.
