Music that Makes Community and the African-American Music Tradition

April 26 @ 6:00 pm - April 27 @ 4:00 pm

$25.00

St. Simon’s, Lincoln Heights, is excited to invite Music That Makes Community to return to the Cincinnati area to share paperless music and leadership practices rooted in African and African-American musical traditions! We are thrilled to host this time of musical and spiritual nourishment as we join voices and hearts in song.

One-Day Workshop,

Saturday, April 27

Introduction to paperless worship and call & response music rooted in African and African-American musical traditions

We begin on Friday evening at 6 p.m. with dinner and an intergenerational Community SING for individuals and families from around the neighborhood. Community SINGs are free and everyone is welcome – no musical experience is required! We’ll sing Spirituals, Gospel songs, folk songs, and oral tradition music from around the world that enlivens the spirit, nourishes the soul, and reminds us we belong to each other.

Nehemiah Luckett

We continue on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a workshop exploring how and why we sing together, noticing the way our bodies and voices are present when we learn through modeling and generous invitation. Centered in Afro- and Afro-American musical traditions, we’ll explore how the energy we create through singing affects what we do in worship as a whole, as well as other parts of our human lives. Lunch, refreshments, and workshop materials are included.

We invite leaders and communities who might be interested in a Four-Day workshop in the Fall (September 25-29) to join us for this one-day event to get a taste for this experience.

Workshop leadership includes Nehemiah Luckett. Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, and now a resident of New York City, Nehemiah has been leading and accompanying choirs for more than 20 years. He is a composer, performer, teacher, and music director for Reverend Billy and The Stop Shopping Choir, a group of anti-consumerist gospel shouters and Earth loving urban activists who have worked with communities on four continents defending community, life, and imagination and resisting Consumerism and Militarism.
